PRIME MINISTER SOYER: “THE MAIN POINT IS THE CONFIRMATION OF OUR
WINNINGS WITHIN AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT”
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer stressed that the
fundamental point on the Cyprus issue is the confirmation of the Turkish
Cypriot winnings gained after 1974 by an international agreement which
envisages the establishment of a partnership on the island.
Evaluating the latest developments with regard to the
Cyprus problem, Prime Minister Soyer said these developments have created
some political advantages. He underlined the need to make good use of this
opportunity for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of
equality.
Explaining that the solution of the Cyprus problem will
be beneficial for not only the two peoples in Cyprus but also for Turkey and
Greece, Soyer said the new process in the Cyprus issue started on the 21st
of March should be well assessed.
Prime Minister Soyer drew attention to the importance
that the new process in the Cyprus problem has started on the UN platform
reminding the attempts by former Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos to
shift the problem to the EU platform.
Reminding that the two leaders of the island will start
face-to-face talks within this month, the Premier stated that the Turkish
Cypriot side will work hard towards providing a solution to the Cyprus
problem on the basis of political equality of the two constituent states
with an equal status and under a single international identity.
He noted that the name of the newly established
partnership is not that important and that what matters most is its content.
Referring to the works being carried out by working
groups and technical committees which were established in line with the 21st
of March agreement between the two leaders, Prime Minister Soyer said these
works have been useful and they will be providing some conveniences in case
of a partnership.
“Following the latest developments in Cyprus, there have
been reports that the UN Secretary-General will appoint the former
Australian Foreign Minister as the representative to Cyprus. These reports
indicate that the start of the negotiations process is inevitable and the
two leaders will maintain the process uninterruptedly until a solution is
reached” he added.
