PRIME MINISTER SOYER “THE GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION WAS
TRYING TO EXERT PRESSURE ON TURKISH SIDE TO GIVE MORE CONCESSIONS”
Prime
Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has said that the Greek Cypriot Side was trying
to exert pressure on the Turkish side by linking the Cyprus Issue with
Ankara’s EU membership negotiations.
Speaking during a visit
to the Gaziveren village yesterday evening, the Prime Minister said
`contrary to the Turkish Cypriot side’s position, the Greek Cypriot
Administration was attempting to delay the start of comprehensive
negotiations`.
The Prime Minister
reminded that the Greek Cypriot Administration had been unjustly accepted
as a member of the EU despite the absence of a solution in Cyprus.
Explaining that the
conditions of a non-solution had further amplified the need and
willingness of the Turkish Cypriot side to reach a settlement on the
island, the Prime Minister said that the Turkish Cypriot side’s primary
goal was to start comprehensive negotiations, with the participation of
the UN Special Envoy, by the first week of September.
Pointing out that the
Greek Cypriot leadership was reluctant to start talks and was trying to do
all it could to delay the start of the process, the Premier said the Greek
Cypriot political leadership was trying to force the Turkish side into
making concessions on the Cyprus Problem by linking the issue with
Ankara’s EU bid.
