ERCAKICA: “MR. VASILIU’S
STATEMENT IS A SIGNIFICANT CONFESSION IN TERMS OF
PROVING HOW THE WHOLE WORLD HAS BEEN DECEIVED BY THE
GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE”
Following is the full statement
issued by Presidential Spokesperson Hasan Ercakica on 27
November:
“The interview published in a Greek
Cypriot newspaper last weekend with the former Greek
Cypriot President Mr. George Vasiliu is enlightening in
terms of revealing what kind of an actor the Greek
Cypriot side is in the negotiation processes.
Mr. George Vasiliu, along with many
other issues, stated that, in order to join the EU, the
Greek Cypriot side had it announced that the UN
Comprehensive Settlement Plan, also known as the Annan
Plan, would be accepted and the duty of announcing this
decision was delegated to himself by the Greek Cypriot
President Mr. Papadopoulos.
In the interview, Mr. Vasiliu asked
“Do you believe that there would be many countries to
approve the EU membership of Cyprus, unless we announced
that we have accepted the Annan Plan?” Mr. Vasiliu said
“If I told the Europeans that we would not accept the
Plan, the decision would not be endorsed and we would
not be an EU member state before a settlement”.
This statement by Mr. Vasiliu is a
significant confession in terms of proving how the whole
world has been deceived by the Greek Cypriot side.
As things stand, the international
circles involved in the Cyprus problem, but particularly
the EU and the EU member states, will have to reconsider
whether they will allow the results that have been
reached through such deception to have an impact on the
Cyprus problem. As long as the Greek Cypriot side
continues to exploit its EU membership, which it has
achieved as a result of such deception, against the
Turkish Cypriots, the international relations will be
perceived as “a race of intrigues” and the loss of
confidence the Turkish Cypriots have been experiencing
towards the international actors involved in the Cyprus
problem will continue to mount.”
