PRESIDENT TALAT: “I AM READY TO MEET WITH
PAPADOPOLOUS”TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat,
responding to a question yesterday stressed that he was
always ready to meet with Mr Papadopulos.
The President’s words are in response to the UN
Secretary General Ban Ki Moon’s statement in his report
for the fiscal year 2008, submitted to the UN General
Council, that the two leaders in Cyprus could meet
before the end of the year.
Responding to reporters’ questions on Mr. Ban’s
statement and Mr. Papadopolous’ words to the effect that
“he could meet with President Talat if the meeting did
not have a social context”, President Talat said he
hasn’t yet examined in detail the Secretary General’s
report but did not refrain from meeting with
Papadopulous before the end of the year.
The President said he could meet the Greek Cypriot
Leader before the end of the year and even before the
end of November, if the UN Secretary Generals calls for
such a meeting.
He also noted that Papdopolous’ request for a meeting
is only because of the Presidential elections in the
south and because of this an invitation for a meeting
would not be extended by the Turkish Cypriot Side in
such a period.
President Mehmet Ali Talat also added that he hasn’t
yet received any invitation for a face-to-face meeting
with the Greek Cypriot Leader Tassos Papadopulos.
