ERCAKICA REACTS TO
GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION’S LETTER SENT TO THE UN
Presidential Spokesman Hasan
Ercakica in his weekly conference held yesterday (29 May) reacted to
the letter sent by Greek Cypriot representative office in New York
to the UN.
Following is the full statement of
Spokesman Ercakica:
“The Greek Cypriot leadership, who
has been postponing the settlement of the Cyprus problem and
striving to reduce the significance of the “yes” vote of the Turkish
Cypriots in the international arena, has also been provoking the
Greek Cypriot people for aggressive activities.
It seems that the activities of
the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church regarding the churches in Northern
Cyprus have set an example for the campaign that the Greek Cypriot
side has been trying to organize concerning Varosha.
Failing to remember that the issue
of Varosha is an issue that will be undertaken during comprehensive
negotiations, the Greek Cypriot side has been organizing campaigns
abroad. These campaigns regarding the return of Varosha can be
defined as activities straining the atmosphere.
It has come to our attention that
Mr. Alexis Galanos, a mayor without a town, is planning to organize
some activities abroad with the support and cooperation of Greek
Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Greek Cypriot Press and
Information Office regarding the return of Varosha to its Greek
Cypriot owners.
The purpose of such activities is
to create false hopes in Greek Cypriot people and to reinforce the
belief that Cyprus problem can be settled via methods other than
comprehensive settlement negotiations.
All these activities, which might
at the same time cause escalation of the tension on the island, are
hollow and imaginary efforts that are spent to mislead the world.
Those who follow the Cyprus problem closely are well aware that the
issue of Varosha can only be undertaken during comprehensive
settlement negotiations. Trying to relate constantly the issue of
Varosha with developments other than comprehensive settlement is
futile. Such efforts are nothing more than an act of playing with
the feelings of the Greek Cypriot people and inspiring hostility
against the Turkish Cypriots”.
