As it is
known, organizing an official press conference, the Greek Cypriot side
announced the so-called economic measures adopted for the Turkish
Cypriots yesterday.
Having
evaluated the issue concerning these measures before, I would like to
reiterate that it is not even a matter of discussion to consider these
measures as elements that will provide positive contribution to the
Turkish Cypriot economy and there is nothing much to say regarding
this issue.
However,
such attempts by the Greek Cypriot side can be considered as fatal
blows to the efforts of finding a mutually acceptable solution to the
Cyprus problem.
As you
all know, in accordance with the agreement signed on 8 July 2006,
there is a process that is being maintained between the
representatives of both sides. The study that can be called “the
process of technical committees” is first of the two sections of the
process. The purpose of this process was to adopt measures that will
facilitate the daily lives and improve the relations of the two
peoples. The unilateral efforts of the Greek Cypriot side to ignore
the democratically elected authorities of the Turkish Cypriots and
their separate administration can only be deemed as actions to abolish
the said process.
Turkish
Cypriots are not citizens of the Greek Cypriot administration. Turkish
Cypriots has a will that was determined by means of democratic methods
and this is the way they regulate their relations.
Such
attempts of the Greek Cypriot side should not be evaluated without
bearing these facts in mind. All political powers who favor reaching a
settlement of peace for the Cyprus problem via negotiations have to be
aware of the fact that such unilateral attempts of the Greek Cypriot
side are destroying the negotiation process. Ignoring these
“destructive actions” of the Greek Cypriot side would mean
deterioration of the current situation in Cyprus and allowing or even
supporting the rise of tension between the two peoples
