TRNC NEW YORK REPRESENTATIVE
GOKERI SENT A LETTER TO THE UN SECRETARY-GENERAL...
“WE INVITE THE GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE TO
CONTRIBUTE TO THE CONFIDENCE BUILDING MEASURES”
TRNC New York Representative Kemal
Gokeri called upon the Greek Cypriot administration to “abandon it
destructive policies and contribute to the confidence building measures
towards finding a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem under the
UN umbrella”.
Gokeri considered Mavroyannis’ letter,
which was sent to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon claiming that “the
national airspace and the international aviation principles had been
violated by the Turkish airplanes”, as being baseless and stated that
these claims were completely rejected by the Turkish Cypriot authorities.
Gokeri in his letter, which was
published as a UN document, to the UN Secretary-General, stressed that
flights within the sovereign airspace of the TRNC have been carried out
with the knowledge and consent of the state authorities and that the Greek
Cypriot administration had no right of say on this issue.
Gokeri explaining that the TRNC Civil
Aviation Department was the sole authority responsible for air traffic and
aviation said the Greek Cypriots’ allegations that the Flight Information
Region (FIR) had been violated were baseless.
Gokeri also emphasized that the Greek
Cypriot administration should be reminded that its collocutor was the
Turkish Cypriot side, not Turkey.
