PRESIDENT TALAT: “MARTYRS
SHOULD ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED”
The 18th of March, which
marks the 92nd anniversary of Canakkale (the Dardanelles)
Victory, was celebrated with ceremonies.
Following the signing of the Martyrs
Cemetery’s special book, President Mehmet Ali Talat stated that today’s
youth and future generations should not forget the martyrs, who died for
peace, and always commemorate them with respect.
President Talat wrote in the Martyrs
Cemetery’s special book:
“We once more commemorate you, who
sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country and people, with
respect.
Every people have the right to live in
freedom and peace. Usually, a struggle or a fight is required in order to
achieve this goal and to provide a safe and independent life for future
generations people suffer and die a martyr. It is the duty of today’s and
future generations to always remember the martyrs who died for freedom and
peace with respect.”
FOREIGN MINISTER AVCI:
“MARTYRS HAVE AN IMPORTANT PLACE IN OUR HISTORY”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
of Foreign Affairs Turgay Avcý issued a message for the anniversary of 18th
of March Martyrs Commemoration Day and Gaziveren Resistance. Foreign
Minister Avcý in his message pointed to the fact that a nation’s
consciousness about its history and respect for its martyrs was a
determining factor for the nation’s existence and independence in the
future. “The biggest role in providing us an independent country belonged
to Martyrs, who died for the territories on which we live happily and
independently today. Martyrs are of great importance in the history of
Turkish Nation and Turkish Cypriots. We have never forgotten the
importance of our martyrs and will always remember them”
Stating that the Turkish Cypriots also
remembered Canakkale (the Dardanelles) Wars which had an important role in
Turkish Nation’s struggle for existence and independence, Avcý said:
“Turkish martyrs, who died 92 years ago during Dardanelles Wars, proved
that the Turkish nation would never sacrifice from its independence and
freedom and any attack against the Turkish nation would be strongly
reacted.” Avcý added that Turkish soldiers who died during Dardanelles
Wars proved to the whole world the Turkish nation’s determination for
independence.
Also commemorating the martyrs who died
during Camlikoy and Gaziveren resistance, Avcý noted:
“We also remember our martyrs, who died
43 years ago during Camlikoy and Gaziveren resistance, with respect. On 19th
of March 1964, hundreds of armed Greek Cypriot guerillas, who attacked the
Turkish Cypriots with the aim of materializing the Fascist Akritas Plan,
faced with simple hearted and determined Turkish Cypriots. This country’s
martyrs, who died in Camlikoy and Gaziveren, defended our independence and
freedom at the risk of their lives. They continue to live in the hearts of
the Turkish Cypriot people.
Our saint martyrs, who sacrificed their
blood and lives for the Turkish Cypriots’ freedom and independence, lie in
peace. We will protect this country, which you died for, and preserve the
Turkish Cypriots’ freedom and independence forever.
On 18th of March, we are
commemorating our martyrs of Dardanelles and of Camlikoy and Gaziveren,
with respect and convey our gratitude and mercy to all our martyrs who
died for their countries.”
