FOREIGN MINISTER AVCI: “MARTYRS HAVE AN IMPORTANT PLACE IN OUR HISTORY”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Turgay Avcý issued a message for the anniversary of 18th of March Martyrs Commemoration Day and Gaziveren Resistance. Foreign Minister Avcý in his message pointed to the fact that a nation’s consciousness about its history and respect for its martyrs was a determining factor for the nation’s existence and independence in the future. “The biggest role in providing us an independent country belonged to Martyrs, who died for the territories on which we live happily and independently today. Martyrs are of great importance in the history of Turkish Nation and Turkish Cypriots. We have never forgotten the importance of our martyrs and will always remember them”

Stating that the Turkish Cypriots also remembered Canakkale (the Dardanelles) Wars which had an important role in Turkish Nation’s struggle for existence and independence, Avcý said: “Turkish martyrs, who died 92 years ago during Dardanelles Wars, proved that the Turkish nation would never sacrifice from its independence and freedom and any attack against the Turkish nation would be strongly reacted.” Avcý added that Turkish soldiers who died during Dardanelles Wars proved to the whole world the Turkish nation’s determination for independence.

Also commemorating the martyrs who died during Camlikoy and Gaziveren resistance, Avcý noted:

“We also remember our martyrs, who died 43 years ago during Camlikoy and Gaziveren resistance, with respect. On 19th of March 1964, hundreds of armed Greek Cypriot guerillas, who attacked the Turkish Cypriots with the aim of materializing the Fascist Akritas Plan, faced with simple hearted and determined Turkish Cypriots. This country’s martyrs, who died in Camlikoy and Gaziveren, defended our independence and freedom at the risk of their lives. They continue to live in the hearts of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Our saint martyrs, who sacrificed their blood and lives for the Turkish Cypriots’ freedom and independence, lie in peace. We will protect this country, which you died for, and preserve the Turkish Cypriots’ freedom and independence forever.

On 18th of March, we are commemorating our martyrs of Dardanelles and of Camlikoy and Gaziveren, with respect and convey our gratitude and mercy to all our martyrs who died for their countries.”
