EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CALLED
UPON THE EU COUNCIL TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE MISSING PERSONS
COMMITTEE
The European Parliament has adopted a
draft resolution calling upon the EU Council to provide financial support
to the work of the Autonomous Missing Persons Committee.
European Parliament’s General Assembly
in the resolution referring to the decisions of the UN in particular, the
EU, European Council and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on the
issue of missing persons, drew attention to the humanitarian side of the
issue for both sides in the island.
The resolution reminded that the
Committee, which was established to search the issue of missing persons
between Turkish and Greek Cypriots, restarted its studies with the UN’s
initiative and pointed out that some progress was achieved as a result of
these studies. The resolution recommended that the Committee should
accelerate its studies in sincere cooperation and honesty with both
Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides and called upon the Committee to abide by
the ECHR’s decisions regarding the issue.
The resolution also requested the EU
Commission, Council and the Parliament to efficiently deal with the issue.
The Autonomous Missing Persons Committee
evaluating the resolution stated that the European Parliament welcomed the
studies of the Committee and called for the continuation its studies.
