33RD
ANNIVERSARY OF FASCIST GREEK COUP…
15th of July was the
33rd anniversary of the fascist Greek coup, which was
initiated by Greek junta against Archbishop Makarios, with the aim
of uniting Cyprus with Greece and then turned into a massacre and
only prevented by Turkish intervention on 20 July 1974 in the
island, by using its rights stemming from the Treaty of Guarantee
as a guarantor power.
The coup was organized against
Archbishop Makarios, who was the so-called “President of the
Republic of Cyprus” and was planning to realize Enosis (uniting
Cyprus with Greece) in long term, but supporters of EOKA and the
Greek junta, who had to delay their Enosis aims for 11 years
because of Turkish Cypriots’ resistance, wanted to unite the
island with Greece immediately.
The Greek junta 33 years ago,
with the aim of realizing Enosis by carrying out a total genocide
against Turkish Cypriot people, together with EOKA supporters in
Cyprus overthrew Archbishop Makarios and announced the EOKA Leader
Nikos Sampson as the so-called President of the `Republic of
Cyprus`.
During the military coup, nearly
2-thousand Greek and Greek Cypriots who were against EOKA or
supporters of Makarios, were killed. The fascist Greek junta also
played a leading role in increasing of the attacks against Turkish
Cypriots.
As the coup turned into a
massacre on the island, Turkey, using its rights stemming from
international Treaty of Guarantee and Alliance as a guarantor
power, intervened the situation in Cyprus on the 20th
of July 1974, in order to protect the lives of the Turkish
Cypriots.
