ERCAKICA: “GREEK
CYPRIOT SIDE IS TRYING TO ACHIEVE OSMOSIS”
Instead of seeking a comprehensive
settlement, the Greek Cypriot side is maintaining its efforts of
finding unilateral solutions to the problems arising as a result of
the continuation of the Cyprus problem. Such efforts by the Greek
Cypriot side not only deepen the problems, but also increase the
tension between the two peoples.
Archbishop Chrisostomos’ efforts
to maintain the churches in the North and to appoint monks to those
churches, organization of campaigns to “return” closed Varosha and
efforts to settle the property issue via courts can be listed as
some of the examples to such efforts of the Greek Cypriot side.
Provided that these efforts are unsuccessful, they immediately turn
to the policy which they pressurize their own people, just like they
did so for the property issue.
This campaign the Greek Cypriot
side has officially been conducting with the support of some people
and institutions has had negative effects over the efforts of
reaching an urgent, just and comprehensive settlement.
A bi communal and bi zonal
settlement and political equality of both sides are principles that
are accepted in general. The aim of the Greek Cypriot side is to
alter these principles and to spread the sovereignty of the Greek
Cypriot Administration to the North as well. By doing so, they are
moving towards osmosis as stated so by Mr.Papadopoulos himself.
Whilst these efforts are being
maintained, the fundamental principles of the Republic of Cyprus,
founded in 1960, are not only being ignored but efforts are also
being spent to hide this fact both from the Greek Cypriot people and
the international actors. The Republic of Cyprus used to be a state
as bi communal as it is envisaged for the new partnership state. The
order of this state was regulated under internationally valid Treaty
of Establishment of the Republic of Cyprus and its Constitution
along with the Treaties of Zurich and London. It also had the
protection of three guarantor countries. The Greek Cypriot side is
striving not to remind this historical fact and therefore, usurp the
rights of Turkish Cypriots.
Naturally, the Turkish Cypriot
side will not act in any way that will encourage such efforts.
The Turkish Cypriot side is of the
view that a just, urgent and comprehensive settlement should be
reached for the Cyprus problem and it will maintain its efforts to
that end.
