PRIME MINISTER SOYER ANNOUNCED THE OFFICIAL FIGURES OF THE
SECOND PHASE OF LAST YEAR’S CENSUS
In a
press conference organized yesterday, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer
announced the official figures of the second phase of the last year’s
census, which was held on 30 April 2006.
According
to the information given by the Prime Minister, including the place of
birth of the individuals, and the places of birth of their parents, de-jure
population of the TRNC, the total number of TRNC citizens, who have
either single or double citizenship, is 178 thousand 31.
A 120
thousand 7 TRNC citizens, who permanently reside in the TRNC-
corresponding to 67.41 per cent- have Turkish Cypriot parents born in
Cyprus (either in the TRNC or in the south); 8 thousand 84 TRNC citizens
have mothers born in Cyprus, whereas their fathers were born in an
other country; 4 thousand 544 TRNC citizens have fathers born in
Cyprus and mothers born in another country.
According
to census results, 132 thousand 635 TRNC citizens have Turkish Cypriot
parents born in Cyprus or one of their parents born in Cyprus in total–
corresponding to 74.5 per cent. The number of the people having their
parents born in Turkey is 42 thousand 572 –corresponding to 23.91 per
cent.
The
TRNC’s de-facto population is 265 thousand 100, and de-jure population
256 thousand 644.
Prime
Minister Soyer explained that population and housing census was made in
accordance with the “ Advices for Population and Housing Censuses for
2010”, prepared jointly with UN European Economic Commission and
European Community’s Statistical Office. He added that the decision
for the census was taken during the CTP-DP coalition government in June
2005, and that they behaved very sensitive for the census to be carried
out in line with the international norms, definitions and transparency
principle.
Reminding
that the Annan Plan envisaged 45 thousand Turkish origin people to stay in
the island and that they have handed the UN a 41 thousand people list
said after the census the number of people having parents born in
Turkey raised to 42 thousand.
