GREEK CYPRIOT MEP MATSAKIS “WE SHOULD CONSIDER THE
POSSIBILITY OF TWO DIFFERENT STATE IN CYPRUS”
During the regular meeting of the Group of the Alliance of
Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), which is the third
largest group of the European Union’s executive organ European
Parliament, Tuesday (30 August) Greek Cypriot European Union
Parliamentarian Marios Matsakis raised the issue of the
political recognition of the Turkish Republic of the Northern
Cyprus.
MEP Marios Matsakis, who some time ago stole a Turkish Flag
from the TRNC and caused to the escalation of a crisis, made
the proposal by saying that: “ Instead of Annan Plan there
should be federal structure in Cyprus just like in Germany and
Spain. It is not true that we live in peace. There exists a big
gap between the two communities. In Cyprus, now an experiment
is being carried out on the joint living of Muslims and
Christians. We cannot force North Cyprus any more, since this
has been continuing for 33 years and no result was achieved. If
the TRNC wants to be a member of the EU it should make an
application. Then the EU evaluates this application. The Cyprus
issues should be solved as soon as possible.”
Belgian Parliamentarian Annemie Neyts also stated that if the
intransigent stance of the Greek Cypriot administration
continued then the TRNC’s recognition would be unavoidable.
Some other parliamentarians also supported Matsakis’ proposal
on Cyprus.
