TRNC PRESIDENCY: “WE HOPE THE ROAD TO COMPREHENSIVE NEGOTIATIONS WILL BE OPENED”

The TRNC Presidency is expecting the road to comprehensive negotiations to reopen after the meeting that will take place between President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot Leader Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos on 5 September 2007.

At the weekly press conference held by the Presidential Spokesman Mr. Hasan Ercakica, it has been stated that the preparations concerning the meeting that will be held between Mr. Talat and Mr. Papadopoulos on 5 September 2007 are being carried out. It has also been stated that within this frame of reference, the consultations with the political parties, the government and Turkey are also being maintained.

Underlining that the Turkish Cypriot side is aware of the fact that leaders of the political parties in the Greek Cypriot side are exploiting the probable meetings they might have with President Mehmet Ali Talat to the end of election purposes, Spokesman Ercakica said “It seems that having a meeting with President Talat or not is a factor that has great influence over the Greek Cypriot electorate. In order to conclude the speculations regarding the issue, we would like to state that President Mehmet Ali Talat is ready to welcome all Greek Cypriot political party leaders, journalists or intellectuals who wish to have a meeting or exchange ideas with him”.

Responding  to a question with regard to EU Term President Portugal’s  Foreign Minister  Luis Filippe Margues Amado’s  visit only to South Cyprus Ercakýca said this  approach  has a negative meaning which leads us to the understand that the EU  could not play a positive role with regard to a  solution.

He added that this is the one of the negative  results  of Greek Cypriot Administration’s  one sided EU membership which also affects  diplomatic  processes.

Ercakica also pointed out that the Turkish side’s annoyance  with regard to Portugal’s  Foreign Minister Amando’s  attitude  was  also  conveyed to  Portugal’s Embassy.
