SERDAR DENKTAS IN MUNIH…
DENKTAS: "PROMISES MADE HAVEN'T BEEN KEPT"
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs
Serdar Denktas stressed that the E.U had not kept its promises to the
Turkish Cypriots.
Indicating that: "The E.U didn't keep its promises. The
E.U has said the Turkish Cypriots wouldn't be excluded, the isolations
would be lifted, but the Turkish Cypriots are still living under the
isolation", Serdar Denktas said the Greek Cypriot side was using the E.U
to further strengthen the isolation and make it more permanent.
Serdar Denktas who is currently in Munih to have high
level contacts with German officials and various NGO's also met with
European Member of Parliament Wolfgang Kreissel Dorfler, who is from the
European Social Democrat Party.
Speaking to the press before his meeting with Dorfler,
Serdar Denktas said the Greek Cypriot side, who had voted 'no' to the
Annan Plan and had entered the E.U as 'half a country' was using E.U laws
and member states in line with its own interests and was engaging in
efforts to further strengthen the unjust isolations imposed on the Turkish
Cypriot side.
For his part, Dorfler stated that in order to reach a
just and permanent settlement in Cyprus the two sides in Cyprus had to
engage in more effort.
Dorfler said: "We must work together for Cyprus. We are
in favour of Cyprus' reunification, therefore we should be patient and
work together. Because, time is needed on this issue. However, for the
problem to be solved the sides in Cyprus should spend more effort".
Within the framework of his contacts in Munih, Serdar
Denktas also met with the Munih Municipality Assembly member (European
Social Democrat Party), Yasar Fincan and the Deputy Prime Minister and
Interior Minister of Bavaria, Gunther Beckstein.
Evaluating his meeting with Beckstein, Serdar Denktas
stressed that in spite of the European Parliament's decision to lift the
Turkish Cypriot peoples isolation and the U.N Secretary-General's call and
promises made by the international community to the Turkish Cypriot people
before the 24 April 2004 referendum, nothing had changed.
Pointing out that the purpose of his two day visit to
the Bavarian capital of Munih was to explain that despite all the good
intentions of the Turkish Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot people were
still living under unjust isolations, to ensure that this was acknowledged
by the E.U countries and to take some forward steps on this issue. He said
this visit also intended to encourage the further development of current
social, economic and cultural relations between Bavaria and the TRNC.
