LAGENDIJK
ACCUSED PAPADOPOULOS IN HIS REPORT
In his report,
the Co-Chairman of the Turkey-EU Joint Parliamentary Commission Joost
Lagendijk who visited Cyprus last month accused the leader of the Greek
Cypriot Administration Mr.Papadopoulos and the European Union.
In the report prepared at the
European Parliament, Mr.Papadopoulos has been accused of distancing the
Greek Cypriot side from a settlement and using its EU membership to
prevent all efforts towards lifting the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot
people and trying to bring the 1960 spirit back to the island and it was
expressed that his main objective is not to solve the Cyprus problem but
to assure his re-election in 2008.
Moreover, the European Union has
been accused of being responsible for the current deadlock in Cyprus in
the report. The report says: "It was thought before the referendum that it
was only necessary to persuade the Turkish Cypriots. B plan was not
prepared. A policy was formulated on the basis that the Greek Cypriots
would accept the plan and with the Greek Cypriots’ membership, the
European Union stayed at a difficult position. The EU Commissioner
responsible for enlargement of that period Gunter Verheugen himself
confessed this situation by saying ‘I was cheated’.
The report continues as: "The Direct
Trade and Financial Assistance Regulations prepared by the EU to end the
isolation of the Turkish Cypriots are prevented by the Greek Cypriots.
More steps should be taken by the EU. Besides, it was proposed that 41-thousand
Turkish-born Turkish Cypriots that are to stay in Cyprus after a
settlement as envisaged by the Annan Plan- should be given permission to
cross the Green Line. Turkish Cypriot youths should be able to benefit
from the Union’s education programs and Turkish Cypriot sea and air ports
should be opened for international use".
GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION
HAS BEEN ACCUSED BY THE AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Organisation of Amnesty
International has issued a report accusing the Greek Cypriot
administration for being unsuccessful to protect the freedom of expression
before the 24 April referandum held in southern Cyprus, putting forward
concrete evidence of extortion in order to make Greek Cypriots to give up
voting "yes" to the Annan Plan.
It has been verified in the report
that, after the call by the Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos to
vote "no" for the Annan Plan, both the Greek Cypriot administration and
the Greek Cypriot community have been unsuccessful for protecting the
freedom of expression and noted that Greek Cypriot public servants were
threatened by losing their jobs through telephone calls. Furthermore, it
has been expressed that Greek Cypriots who supported the "yes" campaign
were aggravated, windows of their cars broken down, their properties
vandalised and that they were beaten. The Amnesty International drew
attention to the fact that noone were arrested by the Grek Cypriot police
during that period.
In the report by the Organisation of
the Amnesty International the Greek Cypriot administration was criticised
for the conditions of arrest by the Greek Cypriot police, the imprisonment
of the aliens who seek for assylum, the impartiality against gypsies and
for the punishments against Yahova Witnesses.
