TRNC FOREIGN MINISTRY "EFFORTS ARE CONTINUING FOR JOINT IMLEMENTATION OF ANKARA PROTOCOL AND FREE TRADE AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE REGULATIONS"

The TRNC Foreign Ministry has stated that Turkey is continuing its efforts to secure the joint implementation of the extended Ankara Protocol and Free Trade and Financial Assistance Regulations prepared for the Turkish Cypriot people.

In a written statement on March 25, the TRNC Foreign Ministry referring to news in the press regarding Ankara Agreement said, " In consultation with the Turkish Foreign Ministry, our Ministry is closely watching the news published in the press yesterday (March 24) to the effect that Ankara and the European Commission have agreed on the extension of the Ankara Protocol to embrace all members of the European Union including the Greek Cypriot South Cyprus. We are fully are that Turkey is continuing its efforts to secure the joint implementation of the extended Ankara Protocol and Free Trade and Financial Assistance Regulations, according to our interest.    There is no change in TRNC’s belief that Turkey would not grant diplomatic recognition to the Greek Cypriot administration, which is using the Protocol as an excuse to demand recognition from Ankara. On the contrary, Turkey told EU officials once again that it is going to issue a declaration that it does not recognize the Greek Cypriot administration as the legal Republic of Cyprus. It is publicly known that, once the talks between Ankara and the EU Commission results, any agreement that has been reached will be approved by the Turkish Parliament. In face of these developments, while the TRNC government’s support continues for Turkey’s EU membership process, we would like to bring to the public opinion that the TRNC will continue to work together with Turkey for the interests of our common national cause.
