ANNAN’S
REPORT : "TURKISH CYPRIOTS WANT PEACE"
UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan stressing that it was not appropriate time for appointing a full-time
representative to Cyprus, who would carry out the good offices mission in
order to find a solution to the Cyprus issue, said the Chief of UNFICYP
Mission Zbigniew Wlosowicz would continue to his duty as his Special
Representative and hold high level meetings with the sides.
Secretary General said,
however, in the forthcoming periods, high level authorities from UN would
also continue to their contacts with the sides in order to take some
soundings.
Secretary General Kofi
Annan submitted his last report on Cyprus to the UN Security Council on
June 6, 2005. The Secretary General’s report was published as a UN
document. In the report while important issues were taken up, it was
stressed that the "Turkish Cypriot Leadership and Turkey have repeated
their call to resume the negotiations to find a solution to the Cyprus
issue within the framework of the comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus
issue (Annan Plan)". The report also referred to the referendum on the
Plan and reminded that the Turkish Cypriots have accepted the plan and the
Greek Cypriots refused.
Secretary General Annan in
his report pointing out that the Presidential elections on April, in the
north, had shown that Mehmet Ali Talat had became the undebatable Leader,
stressed that the election results indicated that the Turkish Cypriots
were continuing to their peaceful commitment on the Cyprus issue.
Pointing out that the
benefits of EU membership to Cyprus were obvious, Annan said however,
membership also caused new court cases and conflicts on property issues. In
the report it was stated that: " the increase of court cases on property
issues is a big threat to individual relations and to conciliation process…
Property issue is a very sensitive issue and only a permanent settlement
can found a solution to it."
