REPRESENTATIVES IN TRNC
Accompanied by Amer Kayani, the American Embassy's Commercial Attache to
Turkey, representatives from 12 prominent US companies and the World Trade
Centre arrived in the TRNC yesterday morning (17 February) for a series of
contacts.
The delegation, which consists of the US companies representatives in Turkey
and covers sectors such as, banking, finance, consultancy, pharmaceutical's,
cargo, transportation, communication and software, will get together with
officials from Turkish Cypriot companies operating in the same sectors to
discuss opportunities for establishing mutual working relations.
Speaking to the press, the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of
Commerce, Ali Erel, pointing out that the arrival of a delegation from US
business circles was an important opening, said this visit could be
interpreted as a political message by the Greek Cypriot side and could
change the Greek Cypriot side's view that "through the TRNC's isolation it
could achieve the kind of settlement it wanted".
For his part,
the USA Commercial Attache to Turkey, Amer Kayani, thanking the Turkish
Cypriots for their hospitality, said an important step had been taken and
such activities would continue to increase in the future.
147,249 VOTERS TO VOTE IN 20 FEBRUARY GENERAL ELECTION
A total of 147,249 voters
will vote in 575 ballot boxes throughout the TRNC in this Sunday's (20
February) general elections for the 50 seats in the TRNC Assembly. 7
political parties and 2 independent candidates will stand compete in the
elections, which will identify the new members of the Assembly and the
government.
46,308 voters will vote in
170 ballot boxes in Lefkosa, 38,681 voters in 147 ballots boxes in Magusa,
27,255 voters in 115 ballot boxes in Girne, 19,823 voters in 76 ballot boxes
in Guzelyurt and 15,182 voters in 67 ballots boxes in Iskele.
Apart from political party
representatives, approximately 2,000 civil servants will be working in the
elections. At the end of elections a total of 16 MP's will be elected from
Lefkosa, 13 MP's from Magusa, 9 MP's from Girne, 7 MP's from Guzelyurt and 5
MP's from Iskele. Political parties that secure more than 5% of the votes
and candidates according to the number of votes received will have the
opportunity to be represented in the TRNC Assembly. |
