PRIME MINISTER TALAT MEETS WITH BARROSO
Prime Minister
Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday (14 February) met with the President of the EU
Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, in Brussels and speaking after the
meeting said the meeting highlighted the EU's continued support for the
Turkish Cypriots.
Explaining that
they were faced with three important amendments, Prime Minister Talat said
the changes to the Green Line Regulation had been made and the only
outstanding thing was its final approval. He said the EU Commission was
continuing its stance on the Financial Aid and Direct Trade Regulations and
both regulations complemented one another. Pointing out that the most
evident and symbolic sign of ending the Turkish Cypriot peoples isolation
was the Direct Trade Regulation and that this was very important for the
Turkish Cypriot side, the Prime Minister said the EU Commission had stated
that it would continue to support the Turkish Cpriots.
Pointing out
that he would continue to have such contacts at various levels, Prime
Minister Talat said for resolutions to be approved in the EU a majority vote
was necessary and in order to achieve this the conditions had to be
developed. He said the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side, Turkey
and Turkey's EU perspective were all inter-related and action would be taken
by the Turkish Cypriot side fully aware of this. He said the Turkish Cypriot
side had a very close and harmonious relationship with the Turkish
government and this would continue.
Indicating that
the calender for a Cyprus settlement would start if the Greek Cypriot side
expressed its willingness for a settlement, Prime Minister Talat, said for
the Greek Cypriot side to express its willingness, the Turkish Cypriot
side's isolation should end and if the isolation was ended then the Greek
Cypriot side and Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papdopoulos, would see that it
could not continue to isolate the northern part of Cyprus through its
non-settlement policies and turn the situation round to their benefit. He
added that the only way to get Papadopoulos to return to the negotiating
table was by clearly highlighting the stance that discriminates and opposes
uniting Cyprus as a whole.
