SERDAR DENKTAS TO MEET AMBASSADORS OF PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVES OF UN
SECURITY COUNCIL
The TRNC Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Serdar Denktas, speaking to
the Anatolian News Agency (AA) correspondent, pointing out that in order to
put an end to Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos', intransigent
stance, said he would start an initiative on this issue.
Explaining that
Papadopoulos' rejection of the UN Secretary-General's call (to list his
objections to the Annan Plan) was unacceptable, Serdar Denktas said this
behaviour highlighted that Papadopoulos was continuing his intransigent
stance. He said, Papadopoulos' irresponsible and selfish attitude had put
the UN Secretary-General in a difficult position and damaged his prestige.
Continuing, Minister Denktas said: "In fact, it's not only the
Secretary-General's prestige that has been damaged but it's also that of the
UN Security Council. An end should be put to Papadopoulos' stance, who
rejected the settlement plan that was supported by the whole world.
Papadopoulos' power, which he thinks he has because of the support of some
of the permanent representatives of the Security Council, should be
reversed. The permanent members of the UN Security Council should do this
themselves and try and save their damaged prestige".
Indicating that
he would request to meet with the ambassadors of the permanent members of
the UN Security Council for this purpose, Minister Denktas, underlined that
the Turkish Cypriot side was in favour of a just and permanent settlement on
the island.
