SERDAR DENKTAS EVALUATES DISI'S VISIT TO TURKEY
The TRNC Deputy
Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Serdar Denktas, yesterday
(10 February) on evaluating the main Greek Cypriot opposition 'DISI' party's
visit to Turkey, said dialogue was important and nothing to be frightened of
and repeated that until a just and lasting settlement based on the equality
of the two sides in Cyprus was reached, not a single Turkish soldier would
be withdrawn from the island.
Serdar Denktas
said: "As the Turkish Cypriot side we know what we want in Cyprus. We are in
favour of a settlement. We have done and will continue to do what's
necessary for this. It's the Greek Cypriot side who is running away from a
settlement and the negotiations. For negotiations to resume, Papadopoulos
needs to return to the negotiating table and convince the UN
Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, that he is sincere about a settlement. Taking
these facts into consideration, we think that dialogue is important for the
sides to understand one another. We're evaluating DISI's contacts with
Turkey with this approach".
Repeating that
the Turkish Cypriot side was determined to reach a comprehensive settlement
on the island, Minister Denktas criticizing the Greek Cypriot leadership for
refraining from dialogue, even in overcoming daily problems and humanitarian
issues, said since the two sides had to live on the same island they had to
reconcile and share as well as be realistic, respect and acknowledge one
other.
DISI Leader,
Nikos Anastasiadis, who was invited to Turkey by the ruling Justice and
Development Party (AKP), yesterday (10 February) got together with Turkish
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul, and other AKP
party officials. Speaking after the meeting, Anastasiadis, pointing out that
his meeting with Gul was "constructive and fruitful", said DISI would
continue to engage in efforts towards settling the Cyprus issue.
For his part,
Abdullah Gul, said, while Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots were doing their
best for a Cyprus settlement, the Greek Cypriot side was deceiving world
public opinion through its intransigent attitude.
