COMMISSION SETS UP SPECIAL UNIT FOR TURKISH CYPRIOTS
The EU Commission's Directorate Generate for Enlargement has
created a special unit for the Turkish Cypriot community called the Task
Force Turkish Cypriot Community, which will be headed by Leopold Maurer.
Leopold Maurer is the head of the EU Commission's delegation
in charge of leading talks with South Cyprus following its EU accession and
the Director General in charge of EU Enlargement.
GREEK CYPRIOT STANCE PREVENTS MISSING PERSONS
COMMITTEE'S WORKS
The Autonomous
Missing Persons Committee, which was set up to identify the graves of the
missing persons in Cyprus, could not convene yesterday (3 February) because
of the absence of its Greek Cypriot member Eliades Georgiadi. As a result,
the Turkish Cypriot side could not present its new documents regarding the
missing persons.
Following the
diggings carried out on 5 January to determine whether or not there are
graves of missing persons at Kizilbas in Lefkosa, an unofficial meeting was
scheduled for 17 January, but again the Greek Cypriot representative did not
attend the meeting. Also, despite the fact that further meetings were
scheduled for 19, 26 January and 2 February one month ago, the Greek Cypriot
representative still did not attend these meetings. Meanwhile, the Greek
Cypriot members also announced that they would not attend tomorrow's (5
February) meeting.
Meanwhile, the
issue of the missing persons will also be on the agenda in the European
Council's Committee of Delegations forthcoming meeting in Strasbourg on 7-8
February, which the Greek Cypriot side will not attend in order to gain a
political advantage.
