GUBERAN: "GREEK CYPRIOTS ARE
POLITICIZING MISSING PERSONS ISSUE"
Pierre Guberan who has been the member
of the Missing Persons Committee for the last 20 years, following his
retirement will leave the island on 22 December 2005.
Third member of the Autonomous Missing
Persons Committee Pierre Guberan stated that some of the missing persons
would never be found due to various reasons. He pointed out that the
relatives of the missing persons should be ready for this.
Stressing that the biggest problem on
the Missing Persons issue, which was one of the most complex and sensitive
issues of the Cyprus problem, was its politicization, Guberan said, the
Greek Cypriot side was politicizing the issue internationally in order to
show that Turkey was responsible and to use it internally for receiving
votes.
Guberan indicating that the missing
persons issue, for many years, has been related to the arrival of Turkish
troops to the island in 1974, said but, the problem has started in 1963.
Referring to rumors, to the effect that
there were Greek Cypriots being hidden in prisons in Turkey Guberan said
he never thought that Turkey would have such a policy of hiding people.
Guberan stated that Anthropology Centre,
which would make identity identification from DNA would start its studies
in 2006 Spring.
Guberan stressed that, in the Autumn of
2006, he thought there would be some people who would take the bones of
their relatives in order to burry.
GREEK CYPRIOTS TO SPEND 100
MILLION CYP FOR REARMAMENT
According to Greek Cypriot daily Politis,
following the USA decision to ban the use of American weapons in Cyprus,
the Greek Cypriot administration had decided to purchase new weapons and
stop using M 48 tanks (USA origin) and cannons with 155 calibre. It was
reported that the money devoted from the budget for purchasing tanks and
cannons increased to 90 million Cyprus Pounds (CYP).
According to the article entitled "100
Million CYP For Armament" published in Politis, cost of purchasing only
new tanks and cannons would be more than 100 Million CYP.
The article stated that the Greek
Cypriot government would pay 50 million CYP to purchase cannons with 155
calibre from China and improved negotiations with Russia through an export
company called ‘Rosovonexport’ to purchase T-80 tanks.
