GREEK CYPRIOTS PREVENTING OPENING OF BOSTANCI GATE
The Foreign Minister of the
Greek Cypriot administration, George Iacovou, said the necessary
infrastructure for opening the Bostanci border gate was not ready yet.
According to Greek Cypriot radio, Iacovou alleged that
construction of the road in the said area had not started due to problems
created by the Turkish Cypriot side.
Pointing out that at least three months was required to
build the road, Iacovou said efforts to prepare the necessary
infrastructure would continue in line with instructions from the EU.
Meanwhile, despite the Greek Cypriot stance on the issue,
on Saturday (27 August), Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer will introduce
to the public the said border gate that will open on 31 August.
According
to the Greek Cypriot daily 'Fileleftheros', South Cyprus has been black
listed for not complying with the criteria for ensuring air safety. 30
other countries are also included in this list.
Referring
to the article in the “Le Monde”, French daily, the Greek Cypriot daily
reported that following investigations carried out by the International
Civil Aviation Organization in 181 countries, it was ascertained that 111
countries had problems regarding air safety. Moreover, it was underlined
that 30 countries including some EU member countries such as South Cyprus
and
Hungary had not taken any steps for
increasing air safety.
The daily
said lack of political will and inadequate technical means meant the
countries in question had not carried out the necessary inspections on the
airline companies.
Meanwhile,
the daily wrote that the Leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Tassos
Papadopoulos, said 'no' to the proposal made by Greek Cypriot opposition
and government partners to form an independent committee to investigate
the 14 August Helios plane crash.
