PRESIDENT
TALAT: "OUR DESIRE FOR PEACE IS A PERMANENT AIM AND WE WON'T LET OUR
RIGHTS BE TRAMPLED ON"
President Mehmet Ali Talat
yesterday (17 August) speaking before the ceremony where the Commander of
the Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces, Lieutenant General Hasan Memisoglu
handed over his duty at the 39th Division and 14th
Armoured Brigade to the new commanders reminded that both Turkey and the
TRNC were determined to protect the political aim of achieving a Cyprus
settlement based on equal rights and the Turkish Cypriot people's
political equality.
Pointing out that the
Turkish Cypriot people had extended its hand for peace and were waiting
for it to be held, President Talat said: "Our desire for peace is in line
with the peace principle set out by the Great Ataturk of 'Peace at home,
Peace in the World', and this desire will never change, and we will never
allow our rights to be trampled on".
Meanwhile, yesterday the
President also received the administrators of the Platform for Democracy
and Development and stressing that the TRNC economy and democracy in the
country needed to be further developed, said to lift the isolations it
was necessary to act together.
Indicating that it was
impossible to accept a people who wanted to integrate with the world to be
isolated and the world's acceptance of this, the President said the
Turkish Cypriot side had to portray the realities to the world and an end
should be put to this injustice
Indicating that the Greek
Cypriot side was constantly arguing that the inhumane embargoes were
necessary and commenting on the recent remark made by the Greek Cypriot
side to the effect that 'if the isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriot
side are lifted, they will not want a settlement', the President said this
was illogical and aimed at continuing the isolation.
