PRESIDENT DENKTAS ASSIGNS UBP LEADER EROGLU TO FORM GOVERNMENT
Following yesterday's (21 October) resignation of the
CTP-BG-DP coalition government, President Denktas has given the duty of
forming the new government to National Unity Party (UBP) leader Dervis
Eroglu, which with 19 MP's has the most seats in the TRNC Parliament.
President Denktas yesterday received Dervis Eroglu and
gave him the duty of forming the TRNC's 19th government.
Pointing out that according to the TRNC Constitution the
UBP Leader has 15 days in which to form the new government, President
Denktas said the Cyprus issue was going through a critical phase and calling
upon everyone, especially the political parties, to act in unity and
solidarity said it is expected that all political parties will negotiate in
good will on the basis of common minimum interests.
PRIME MINISTER TALAT MEETS WITH UK MINISTER
FOR EUROPE
Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday (21 October)
met with Dennis MacShane, the UK's Minister for Europe, who arrived on the
island yesterday morning to receive first hand information on the Cyprus
issue.
Pointing out that during his meeting with Minister
MacShane he would discuss all issues, Prime Minister Talat said he would put
forward his views on ending the Turkish Cypriots' isolation and the start of
direct flights. "We'll discuss everything", he said.
Minister Shane, pointing out that he would discuss with
Prime Minister Talat all those issues that the UK wanted to achieve progress
on in Cyprus, said the UK Government wanted to see Turkey, Cyprus, the UK
and other EU member countries acting together and while contacts regarding
Turkey's EU membership process continues, it was necessary to find a Cyprus
settlement and the whole of Cyprus should take its place in the EU.
