U.K MP'S IN TRNC

In order to prepare a comprehensive report on the Cyprus issue, a group of British MP's from the U.K Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee arrived in the TRNC yesterday (10 November). Upon their arrival, the British MP's had separate meetings with President Rauf Denktas, Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Serdar Denktas, National Unity Party (UBP) Leader, Dervis Eroglu, and the Leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH), Mustafa Akinci.

During their meeting with President Denktas, the British MP's asked the President several questions on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and in addition to responding to these questions, President Denktas also gave the British MP's a "Talking Points" document outlining the views of the Turkish Cypriot side.

Speaking after the meeting, President Denktas stressing that no one had the right to forcefully impose the so-called "Cyprus Government" on the TRNC, said a future settlement in Cyprus would only be possible if it was based on an equal partnership in all fields between the two sides.

Prime Minister Talat met with the British MP's, headed by John Maples and including Fabian Hamilton, Andrew Mackay, Bill Olner and Greg Pope, in a dinner last night (10 November). The British High Commissioner, Lyn Parker, and the British High Commission's Secretary In Charge of Turkish Cypriot Affairs, Jill Morris, also attended the dinner.

The British MP's also met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Serdar Denktas, and no statement was issued after the meeting.

Speaking after their meeting with the National Unity Party (UBP) Leader, Dervis Eroglu, and the Leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH), Mustafa Akinci, John Maples said the purpose of this visit was to understand why the Greek Cypriot side voted 'no' and the Turkish Cypriot side voted 'yes' to the Annan Plan.
