Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat read out the CTP-BG and
DP coalition government’s 24-page government program in the TRNC
Parliament yesterday (January 19).
According to the TRNC Constitution and Parliament
Statutes, two days after its reading (January 22) negotiations on the
government program will start and one day after the negotiations end (January
24) the government program will be put to a vote of confidence.
In full conformity with the President, the coalition
government was formed with the primary aim of achieving a settlement on the
basis of the Annan Plan before May 2004 and, on a date agreed on by all side’s,
going to a referendum.
Under the slogan, "the State is for people",
the government program is based on conformity with EU norms and democracy,
and envisages a series of arrangements such as competitive economy, the
restructuring of agriculture, and preventing tax loses.
Various articles included in the government program
stipulates that the new government’s implementations will be carried out
in transparency, without paving the way for partisanship, and foresees
improvements in all sectors such as electricity, water, education and health.
The government program also includes forming a common
policy through an exchange of views with Turkey during the settlement
process of the Cyprus issue and the further improvement of existing economic,
social and cultural relations on the basis of reciprocal respect, interest
and cooperation with Turkey.
The government program also states that the continuation
of Turkey’s guarantorship rights over Cyprus vested by International
Agreements will be protected.
