TURKISH COUNCIL OF MINISTERS MEETING: "TURKEY DETERMINED TO CONTINUE NEGOTIATIONS WITH PRESIDENT DENKTAS"

ONGOING EFFORTS TO FORM NEW GOVERNMENT

The Republican Turkish Party-United Forces (CTP-BG), who are continuing their efforts to form the new government, yesterday (January 5) declared that they have broken off ties with the National Unity Party (UBP) and were focusing on forming a coalition between the Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH) and the Democrat Party (DP). Within this context, Mehmet Ali Talat proposed to the DP to form a coalition.

Yesterday, CTP-BG leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, and party leaders met with the UBP, BDH and DP and stated that his party was concentrating on the idea of forming a widely supported government between the CTP-BG, BDH and the DP political parties.

Meanwhile, the Democrat Party decided to evaluate various government formulas in its party’s assembly.

TURKISH COUNCIL OF MINISTERS MEETING: "TURKEY DETERMINED TO CONTINUE NEGOTIATIONS WITH PRESIDENT DENKTAS"

Turkish Justice Minister and Government Spokesman, Cemil Cicek, stated that Turkey was determined to continue the Cyprus negotiations with President Denktas.

The Turkish Council of Ministers convened yesterday (January 5) and a large part of its agenda was taken up by discussing the Cyprus issue.

Following the meeting the Turkish Justice Minister and Government Spokesman, Cemil Cicek, stated that Turkey really wants to settle the Cyprus issue by resuming negotiations on the basis of the Annan Plan. He said if the problem could not be settled within a certain time framework, then the responsibility for this did not rest with Turkey.

Cicek said the Cyprus issue wasn’t just important for the Turkish citizens and TRNC citizens living there but, also very important for Turkey because it was a national cause.

Referring to the EU issue, Cicek said there was a time constraint both for the solution of the Cyprus issue and for EU membership and that this time period should be used constructively. He added that due to reasons not stemming from Turkey the Cyprus issue couldn’t be solved and following the TRNC’s recent general elections Turkey was in the process of developing an initiative for a re-evaluation of the situation.

Explaining that Turkey wanted to resume a new round of talks on the Cyprus issue on the basis of the Annan Plan and sincerely desired a settlement of the issue, Cicek said, if this issue could not be settled by a certain date responsibility for this would not rest with Turkey and this had also been announced by the Turkish Foreign Minister. He said while evaluating the period up until May, without ignoring past difficulties and having a clear understanding of the point reached and future prospects, Turkey was in favour of restarting the negotiation process.
