The
UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, yesterday (February 11) met for a second
time with the TRNC delegation, headed by President Rauf Denktas, and the
Greek Cypriot delegation, headed by Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos
Papadopoulos. Speaking after the meeting, Annan stated that the negotiations
would also continue today (February 12). Speaking after the second meeting,
President Denktas said: “We’ll continue tomorrow (February 12)”.
The
third meeting will start this evening, and in this meeting the Turkish
Cypriot side will receive the Greek Cypriot side’s response to their
written proposal, which they submitted in the second meeting and which the
Secretary-General found to be constructive.
Commenting
on the Turkish Cypriot side’s proposal, the Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Serdar Denktas said: “We went to the meeting
today (February 11) with a proposal to find a viable settlement to the
Cyprus problem. This was a proposal to overcome the obstructions. The
Secretary-General found our proposal to be constructive. Tomorrow (February
12) the Greek Cypriot side will give their response to our proposal. If the
Greek Cypriot side’s response is positive, the negotiations will start on
Monday (February 16)”.
Pointing
out that in case of either a positive or negative response being given by
the Greek Cypriot side the two side’s would depart from New York this
evening, Serdar Denktas said as a result of the news blackout imposed he
could not speak about the details of the Turkish Cypriot side’s proposal.
Commenting
on the Turkish Cypriot side’s proposal, President Denktas said
Turkey
prepared the proposal and in the proposal Annan was not the only arbitrator.
President
Denktas said: “We came to New York to modify and turn into an acceptable
plan the document, which we have constantly said that we will not accept it
in its current form but, which the world and the Secretary-General says it
will not withdraw but say that ‘we have the right to modify it’. We are
currently in the process of modifying it. If the modifications that we want
can be made, the rights of the Turkish Cypriot side would have been
protected. If not, then we will evaluate the situation amongst ourselves and
with
Turkey
”.
