The UN
Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, TRNC President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot
leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, yesterday (February 10) met in
New York
for a historical summit meeting aimed at reaching a settlement on the
Cyprus
issue. The three leaders will again get together this evening.
The
tripartite meeting between the UN Secretary-General, TRNC President Denktas
and Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, started yesterday evening and
lasted for approximately one hour and forty-five minutes.
In
a brief statement issued after the meeting President Denktas said the TRNC
delegation would not be returning to the TRNC on Wednesday (February 11).
For his part, Papadopoulos said: “At this stage, a conclusion has not been
reached and we will continue the negotiations today (February 11)”.
Speaking
after the two leaders, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative
for
Cyprus
, Alvaro
de Soto
, said: “It was a very constructive discussion. The Secretary-General has
asked them to stay on. We will meet again tomorrow (February 11). We have
asked the parties not to speak about the discussions at this stage. We
haven’t quite yet finished. We need more time”.
Prior
to the tripartite meeting, Annan met separately with President Denktas and
Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos. The two sides will meet again
this evening. If the two leaders agree, the
Cyprus
talks will continue in Lefkosa next Monday (February 16).
Headed
by President Denktas, the TRNC delegation includes Prime Minister, Mehmet
Ali Talat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Serdar
Denktas, Presidential Undersecretary, Ergun Olgun, and the President’s
Adviser on Constitutional Affairs, Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Soysal.
The
Greek Cypriot leader is being accompanied by the Greek Cypriot negotiating
team, government and opposition party representatives and the former Greek
Cypriot leader, Glafcos Clerides.
The
UN delegation includes Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, his Special
Representative for
Cyprus
, Alvaro
de Soto
, and the Secretary-General’s Political Assistant, Kieran Pendergast.
Speaking
after the meeting, the, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Serdar Denktas, pointing out that the Cyprus talks had officially
started, said: “Face-to-face talks will start in Lefkosa on February 16,
but there is a possibility that they may continue in a European capital”.
He also stated that the Turkish Cypriot side was pleased with the current
developments.
Pointing
out that the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan’s stance was very
constructive, Serdar Denktas said that at this stage he was unable to give
more information, but was hopeful that a good outcome would be achieved. He
added: “While the Turkish Cypriot side conveyed its reservations and views
regarding the Anna Plan to the UN Secretary-General, the Greek Cypriot side
also conveyed their reservations. According to the Annan Plan and the
Secretary-General’s invitation letter (to resume talks), the negotiation
process has started and there is hope for making a coma patient better”.
