Following
the letter sent by the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, to the two sides in
Cyprus inviting them to resume the Cyprus talks in New York, the TRNC
delegation, headed by President Denktas, departed from the TRNC for New York
yesterday (February 8).
Headed
by President Denktas, the TRNC delegation includes Prime Minister, Mehmet
Ali Talat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Serdar
Denktas, Presidential Undersecretary, Ergun Olgun, and the President’s
Adviser on Constitutional Affairs, Mumtaz Soysal. The TRNC delegation is
expected to return to the TRNC on February 11.
Speaking
at
Gecitkale
Airport
before their departure, President Denktas said upon the UN
Secretary-General’s invitation he was going to
New York
to discuss the latest developments on the
Cyprus
issue with him.
Pointing
out that the scheduled meetings in
New York
would be for one day, but could be extended and that he didn’t want to say
too much at this stage because they were in the stage of bargaining, the
President said: “Our people are fully aware of our position. The aim is to
speedily achieve a permanent and just settlement that would please the two
sides. This depends on the two side’s determination and the steps to be
taken. We’re going to
New York
with good will and hope to return with good news”.
Meanwhile,
speaking at Istanbul Ataturk Airport, before departing for New York,
President Denktas responding to reporters questions if the UN briefing to be
given today (Febraury 9) by the UN Secretary-General would be an element of
pressure or not, said the Turkish Cypriot side would evaluate this according
to the outcome of the briefing and stressed that the issue could not be
resolved through pressure, but only if the two sides agreed.
The
Greek Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, also left the island yesterday
(February 8) to attend the talks in
New York
. The Greek Cypriot leader will be accompanied by former Greek Cypriot
leader, Glafcos Clerides, some political party leaders and three Greek
Cypriot officials from the Greek Cypriot negotiating team.

ORGANIZATION IN
SOUTH CYPRUS
The
Greek Cypriot daily “Mahi”, under the headline, “Anarchists Flock To
Cyprus”, reported that in
South Nicosia
there is an organization operating under the name of the “Cyprus Anarchist
Centre”, which through the internet is informing Greek Cypriot anarchists.
The
daily reported that in the organization’s web page various photographs
praising anarchism as well as the November 17 terrorist organization leader,
Kufontina, were displayed.
