Pointing out that Turkey and the TRNC are working on a
study about what could be done to open a new window on the Cyprus issue,
President Denktas said if the Annan Plan included the principles of two
peoples, two states, two sovereignties and Turkey’s continued effective
guarantee, he would negotiate it.
Speaking on BRT’s ‘Akis’ program, the President
stressing that those people who said "we are ready to sign the Annan
Plan" have now changed their stance and are saying, "we are ready
to negotiate it", reminding that the UN Secretary-General had said the
two sides couldn’t go outside the framework of the Plan and that Greek
Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos, had said the main philosopohy of the
Plan could not be changed, said: "I don’t know what they’re going
to negotiate".
Explaining that both Turkey and the TRNC were carrying
out studies to determine what could be done on the Cyprus issue, President
Denktas said: "If you wait, a new window will be open as a result of
these studies, and we will start to discuss if the outside world and Greek
Cypriots will like this or not".
Pointing out that a new formula would be formed as a
result of combining these studies, the President said everyone should know
that the Turkish Cypriot side had no intention of giving up its state and
guarantees. He added that Greek Cypriots could not come and settle as they
wished amongst the Turkish Cypriots without restricted quotas. "This
will be regulated according to our laws and there cannot be an approach that
will lead to 100,000 people becoming refugees. This too will be restricted",
he said.
