DENKTAS: "CYPRUS ISSUE SHOULD BE AN OBSTACLE FOR GREEK CYPRIOTS’ ENTRY"

President Denktas speaking during a conference on the Cyprus issue in Turkey on 1 November, explaining that the Cyprus issue was a legal issue with the international agreements, which were made up of five signatures in 1960, rights were given to the two sides in Cyprus, stressed that with these agreements it was endorsed that Cyprus could not enter into any union without Turkey. The President said if the Cyprus issue was an obstacle for EU entry of any one side, then it should be the same for the Greek Cypriot side’s entry.

The President added that if a settlement was desired before May (2004), Greece, being aware of the devastation she has caused in Cyprus by rejecting her signature, should settle the issue with Turkey by deciding how to guarantee a new Cyprus, based on bi-zonality and two peoples.

Later, visiting the Tokat Association for Industrialists and Businessmen and the Tokat Governorship, where he attended various inauguration ceremonies as well as several meetings, President Denktas, referring to the Annan Plan, said, the Cyprus issue was the Turkish Cypriot peoples cause and the Annan Plan was planned to remove the Turkish troops from the island. He said what the Greek Cypriots couldn’t achieve through force of arms, they were now trying to achieve through the EU. "Turkey will not give up on Cyprus", he said.

The President also said that the the Turkish Cypriot people couldn’t enter any union without Turkey and added that the aim of the Annan Plan was to bring down the Turkish flag.

Completing his contacts in Tokat, on 2 November, President Denktas, speaking at Samsun Airport before departing, pointing out that there were some unfounded and unjust publications on Cyprus, said the Annan Plan would secure the removal of Turkish troops from the island and the return of all Greek Cypriot refugees to their former homes, which would lead to 100,000 Turkish Cypriots, half of the Turkish Cypriot population, becoming refugees again.

Pointing out that, as also put forward by the Turkish government, the Turkish Cypriot side desires a settlement based on the realities, the President said: "What are the realities? The existence of two peoples in Cyprus, two democracies and the existence of two states and the continuation of Turkey’s effective guarantee. If the issue is to be solved these must be included in the Annan Plan".

President Denktas said if Greece really wanted to unite Cyprus, she should stop following the wrong path, which is contrary to international agreements, and also persuade the Greek Cypriots to do the same.

Pointing out that the US was acting one-sidedly on the Cyprus issue, President Denktas said for 40-years, the US has shown the Greek Cypriot side as being the legitimate government of Cyprus. Condemning the US for helping the Greek Cypriot government to extend their domination over the Turkish Cypriots, President Denktas said: "We request that the US give this up and tell the Greek Cypriots that they will never be the government of the Turkish Cypriots. I repeat that if there is to be pressure on this issue it should be exerted on Greece. It is the Greeks and Greek Cypriots who have violated international agreements".
