Receiving a delegation from the
Association of Fighter Commanders on March 1, 2003, headed by Hasan Keskin,
President Denktas said a question asking to say "yes" or
"no" to Annan plan would be misleading and wrong and instead of
giving a result, would deceive the people.
Pointing out that the plan has not been
completed yet and that it includes many deficiencies, President Denktas said
at the plan there exists some different issues that are rejected by Turkish
and Greek Cypriots.
Underlining that no state in the world
decide to referenda with the order of the others, President Denktas stressed
that the Annan plan which will be put to the referendum has not been
completed yet and has to be completed.
President Denktas said with the
referendum, the people would be asked whether they accept 50-60 thousands of
people to become refugees, the resettlement of 80 thousands Greek Cypriots,
and the Greek Cypriots’ title deeds as valid while the Turkish Cypriots’
as invalid.
President Denktas pointed out that he will
go to Ankara within this week and again discuss the point reached with the
TRNC parliament.
EROGLU: "ANNAN PLAN AIM
IS TO ANNIHILATE THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS"
Speaking during a meeting in the village
of Yenierenkoy to brief the people on the revised UN plan and a possible
referendum, TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said that the Annan plan was
prepared with the aim of annihilating the Turkish Cypriots and he asked the
people to take this reality into consideration while voting in a possible
referendum.
Stressing that Annan plan is a part of a
scenario, Prime Minister Eroglu drew attention to the fact that the UN plan
was jointly prepared by the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser for
Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, and the British Special Envoy for Cyprus, Lord David
Hannay, in cooperation with Greek and Greek Cypriot duo.
Prime Minister Eroglu said according to
the UN plan, a new formation will be created under the title of "United
Cyprus Federation" which will be the continuation of the "Republic
of Cyprus".
Eroglu explained that the third plan is
envisaging the return of all the Greek Cypriot refugees which means the
return of 160 thousands of Greek Cypriots.
Explaining that Karpaz was left to the
Turkish component state with the new plan while many parts of it were
envisaged to be given to the Greek Cypriots, Eroglu said in the event of the
implementation of the plan, around 55-60 thousands of Turkish Cypriot people
will have to migrate which will also cause problems.
Pointing to the fact that in the event of
the acceptance of the UN plan, the military contingent of Turkey will be
limited by 6000 troops, Eroglu asked "is it possible to maintain the
effective guarantee of Turkey under these circumstances."
TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER
YAKIS: "THERE IS NO CHANGE OF POLICY ON THE CYPRUS ISSUE"
The Turkish Foreign Minister Yasar Yakis
said that his government’s policy on the Cyprus issue has not changed.
Yakis stressed that Turkey always supports a just and permanent solution to
be found to the Cyprus issue.
Yakis reminded that his government has
continued its contact with President Rauf Denktas after the European Union
Copenhagen Summit in order to give a chance to the negotiations process.
