"THE
LOIZIDOU CASE"
PRESIDENT DENKTAŞ: “THE AIM OF TURKEY’S DECISION IS TO CREATE THE
ATMOSPHERE TO SOLVE PROPERTY ISSUES IN A BALANCED AND RECIPROCAL MANNER”
President Rauf Denktaş
stating that, on the issue of property, the Turkish side has always desired
a settlement through exchange and compensation, further added that Turkey
has been negotiating on the "Loizidou case" for four years, and
their decision regarding the payment of compensation aims to create the
atmosphere to solve property issues in a balanced and reciprocal manner.
During the program "Üçüncü
Boyut" on Bayrak Television aired on 20 June 2003, the President stated
that in the decision taken, the payment of compensation would take place in
October and stated that "we have legal preparations we ought to carry
out until October and the Turkish side has the issue of compensation of
their properties on the Greek side".
The President evaluated this
issue as creating the atmosphere to solve these issues in a balanced and
reciprocal manner.
Underlining that Greek
Cypriots could apply to TRNC courts, President Denktaş stated that the
Commission legislation prepared regarding this issue had been evaluated by
EU lawyers.
President Denktaş stated
that with the legislation, which is being prepared, a commission which Greek
Cypriots could apply to dealing with exchange and compensation will be
formed and that steps would be taken for the Turkish rights on the Greek
side and added that these measures could not be interpreted as returning
back.
