29TH
ANNIVERSARY OF GREEK MILITARY COUP
Today
is the 29th anniversary of
the bloody Greek Military Coup in Cyprus, which was started against
Makarios, under the leadership of Greek Generals with the aim of annexing
the island to Greece (ENOSIS).
Greek
Cypriots supporting EOKA, who were against the further delay of the
island’s annexation to Greece and the officers and soldiers of the
Colonels Junta in Greece, who could not succeed in achieving their aim of
Enosis because of the Turkish Cypriots’ resistance during the 11 years
between 1963-74, with the aim of immediately achieving Enosis,
staged an armed attack against the so-called “Cyprus President”
Makarios, whose aim was to achieve Enosis in the long run.
The
Greek Military Coup in cooperation with those EOKA supporters in Cyprus,
with the aim of achieving Enosis, toppled Makarios and proclaimed EOKA
leader Nikos Sampson as the so-called “President” 29 years ago.
During
the coup, approximately 2,000 Greek and Greek Cypriots, who were against
EOKA or Makarios, were killed. The Junta also led the escalation of the
terrorist activities against the Turkish Cypriots.
Makarios,
who just about managed to save his life during the coup, in his speech at
the UN Security Council on July 19, 1974, clearly displaying the aim of
Greece, explained the massacres and threats awaiting the Turkish Cypriots.
Accordingly,
Turkey by using her rights granted to her by the international Treaty of
Alliance and Guarantee, with her Peace Operation on July 20, 1974, by
preventing the illegal annexation of the island to Greece saved the Turkish
Cypriots from total annihiliation. In Greece, the Junta period which started
with the military coup in 1967, became
history and as a result of the coup democracy was restored in Greece.
