CYPRUS NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE TODAY

TRNC President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides will today continue with their direct negotiations aimed at reaching an agreement on the Cyprus issue. The two leaders will meet at the Lefkosa Conference Centre in the UN buffer zone at 16:00.

The UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, will also be present at the meeting, at which the negotiation timetable will be determined.

PRIME MINISTER EROGLU: “OUR WISH IS TO REACH A SETTLEMENT THAT WILL PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF TURKEY AND THE TURKISH CYPRIOTS”

TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said: “From the negotiations, which we are participating in goodwill, our wish is to reach a settlement that will satisfy the Turkish Cypriot people, and protect the interests of  Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots”.

Pointing out that an agreement could only be reached with at least two parties, the Prime Minister said: “The stance adopted by the other side is important. In opinion polls carried out in the Greek Cypriot Administration, more than 76 per cent of Greek Cypriots opposed the UN plan, and, I think these opinion polls could also have an effect on the opinions put forward at the negotiating table”.

Stating that the plan was prepared by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Prime Minister Eroglu said: “In the end there is a plan. But, we have not prepared this plan. Others have prepared it. Of course, we have to evaluate its contents carefully, and then we will be in a position to evaluate it accordingly at the negotiating table”.

He added: “In any case, there cannot be a position where we will accept the plan with our eyes shut”.

Prime Minister Eroglu also said that the negotiation process had resumed and efforts were under way to determine if it was possible to improve the plan through negotiations.

Prime Minister Eroglu was speaking upon his arrival at Esenboga Airport, Ankara, where he flew yesterday to give a series of lectures on the Cyprus issue as well as to have various contacts with Turkish officials.
