TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu speaking
on Bayrak Radio Television (BRT) on January 3, pointing out that there is no
any difference of views between the Turkish government and state authorities
on the Cyprus issue, said he was very relieved with assurances given by the
leader of the Turkish Justice and Development Party, Recep Tayyip Erdogan,
and Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, during his contacts with them.
Stressing that in the event of signing the
UN document, the possibility to change it would be eliminated, Eroglu said
there are some aspects of the document, mainly on the issues of sovereignty,
the maps, and the resettlement of Greek Cypriots to the North, which should
be amended if it is to be a basis for negotiations.
Reiterating that "there cannot be a
Turkey without the TRNC", Eroglu said that there could not be a
national policy without Turkey.
Asked whether there exists a difference of
opinion or not with the Turkish government on the Cyprus issue Eroglu said:
"The Turkish state and government have protected the national cause and
the recent statements made by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Foreign
Minister Yasar Yakis are in this direction." Eroglu also added that he
would continue his contacts with the Turkish authorities.
Stressing the importance of whether Kofi
Annan’s document is a basis for negotiations, the Prime Minister reminded
that the two parties have conveyed to the UN Secretary General aspects of
the document they would like to amend. He also added that there are some
aspects which should be amended, particularly on the issues of sovereignty,
the maps, and the resettlement of Greek Cypriots to the North, if it is to
be a basis for negotiations.
SOUTH CYPRUS’ CONNECTION TO
MILOSEVIC VERIFIED BY UN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL
The Greek Cypriot weekly ‘Kipros Simera’
reported that documents verifying that money was laundered in South Cyprus
by ex-Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic would be handed over to the
United Nations by the Government of Yugoslavia.
The weekly reported that confidential
documents containing detailed information about South Cyprus’ involvement
in the money laundering activities of the Milosevic rejime would be handed
over to the UN International Criminal Tribunal.
It stated that the documents to be handed
over by the Government of Yugoslavia contain detailed information which
identify that the Milosevic regime was laundering money via the many
offshore companies operating in South Cyprus, and also refers to the "Anteksol"
and "Brawnskor" offshore companies.
The weekly added that the UN International
Criminal Tribunal believes these two offshore companies in question
laundered money and were the main headquarters for the purchase of secret
weapon systems via South Cyprus and Israel.
