The
latest developments on the Cyprus issue following the process of the Annan
plan and the Hague Summit, were taken up in a special session of the TRNC
Assembly yesterday.
President
Denktas briefed parliament on the results of the Hague Summit and the Annan
plan process and listened to the views of government representatives and
opposition parties.
At
the special session, both the Turkish Cypriot side’s recent package of
proposals and the package of measures said to be taken
by the Greek Cypriot side against the Turkish Cypriots after April
16, were also taken up.
Speaking
at the end of the special session, President
Rauf Denktas pointing out that the session was very useful, said ideas were
put forward and discussed.
Stressing
that no decision was taken during the meeting, President Denktas said his
recent package of proposals submitted to the Greek Cypriot side and the
package of measures prepared by the Greek Cypriot side against the Turkish
Cypriots were also taken up.
NATIONAL
UNITY PARTY REACTS TO GREEK CYPRIOTS’ MEASURES AGAINST TURKISH CYPRIOTS
The
coalition partner, the National Unity Party (NUP), evaluated the measures
scheduled to be taken against the Turkish Cypriots by the Greek Cypriots as
an action directed towards destroying the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus and degrading the Turkish Cypriot people.
In a
written statement issued by the NUP, it was stated that the determination of
the Turkish Cypriot side for finding a just, lasting and viable
settlement to the Cyprus issue was deemed as a weakness by our
counterparts and the recent ‘package of measures’ said to be taken by
the Greek Cypriot administration against the Turkish Cypriots were the
result of this misunderstanding.
Pointing
out that acting as if it were an important favour, the Greek Cypriot
administration was trying to give back a large portion of the basic human
rights of the Turkish Cypriots, which they usurped with force of arms since
1963, the statement stressed that this initiative was a hostile action
directed at destroying both the TRNC and degrading the Turkish Cypriot
people.
Pointing
out that the Turkish Cypriot people would not respect an approach that
ignored the existence of the TRNC and put the Turkish Cypriots into the
status of a “protected minority”, the statement said that while it is
continuing its efforts in good will for finding a just, permanent and viable
settlement to the Cyprus issue, the Turkish Cypriot side expects
international public opinion to encourage the Greek Cypriot administration
to abandon its bad intentions and display a positive stance.
