President Denktaž stressed that the Serbia-Montenegro Agreement is a very good model for the possible Cyprus settlement. The President pointed out that the Serbia-Montenegro Agreement involves two separate, equal and sovereign states and the base of the agreement is equality. President Denktaž “We are ready and willing to shape this model for Cyprus in away that it will fit the requirements of the EU. That agreement model’s importance lies in the fact that it is based on the two equal and separate entities which one cannot rule the other. Even though one’s population is greater than the other they are politically equals As far as they understand that as the Turkish Cypriots we exist as a separate and equal state and the Greek Cypriots is not and can not be our government then we are ready and willing to shape this model agreement to fit in the EU requirements "

As it is known the administration Office of the EU Commission in Charge of Enlargement stated that the Serbia-Montenegro Agreement model was not fitting the EU requirements because the agreement model proposed to have two Central Banks. However, the Administration Office stated that President Denktaž’s proposal to take this agreement, as a model for Cyprus settlement was pleasing.

President Denktaž pointed out that he had made a proposal to the leader of Greek Cypriot Administration to lift the embargoes at least on the sports and cultural events which would contribute the rapprochement between the two sides especially at the times like this when the face to face talks are ongoing. The President said that Mr.Clerides rejected the proposal. President Denktaž continued: “They rejected the proposal because they scare that it would be revealed that they are the illegitimate government of Cyprus." The President stressed that the embargoes on the participation of the Turkish Cypriot people in international sport events is a big shame of humanity and no one would get benefit form it. Lifting the embargoes would be an indication of the goodwill which in turn would bring the sides closer.

President Denktaž received the Director of Foreign and European Affairs Lower Committee in the US Senate Mr. Michael Haltzel who is also the assistant to US Senator Mr.Joseph Biden.
