PRESIDENT DENKTAŽ “UNLESS A DRAFT AGREEMENT EMERGED BY JUNE THEN THERE WOULD BE NO DRAFT AGREEMENT IN FUTURE”

Responding to reporters’ questions after the conference at the Marmara University in Istanbul, President Denktaž said that provided Mr. Verheugen accepts his request, and then the Turkish Cypriot side will not challenge the Greek Cypriot side’s views on the European Union issues.

Reminding the statements by the Greek Cypriot administration’s spokesman, President Denktaž said that the United States, United Kingdom and the European Union gave an assurance to the Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides that the talks would be concluded with an agreement which will suit the Greek Cypriot’s demands.

President Denktaž said that he will continue to attend the direct talks, but, he will ask the United States authorities and Mr. Clerides if such an assurance has been given to the Greek Cypriots. “If there is a guarantee, then why are they occupying us with the talks” he said.

Mr. Denktaž stressed that unless a draft agreement emerged by June then

there would be no draft agreement in the future.

He said that the Cyprus problem had been discussed in every aspect so far and that nobody would be able to waste anybody’s time any more.

THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND DEFENCE Mr.ERTUŠRULOŠLU “MOST OF THE EU MEMBERS SUPPORT GREEK CYPRIOT INTRANSIGENCE”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense Tahsin Ertušrulošlu who went to Ankara on Tuesday as the guest of the Students’ Council of the Bilkent University gave a lecture on the topic of Cyprus and its relations with the European Union.

Speaking at the lecture the Minister reminded that the international arena made the Cyprus Question unsolvable by treating the Greek Cypriot Administration as the legal government of Cyprus and this left Greek Cypriot side without any motivation for the solution. Mr.Ertušrulošlu added that most of the member countries of the EU have been encouraging Greek Cypriot intransigence by continuing to treat them as the sole legal government of Cyprus.

The Minister continued, “We are not against the EU. We are against its policies towards us.” Mr..Ertušrulošlu stressed that Turkey has so many rights and interests on Cyprus and it is not possible for Turkey to make a single step back concerning this national case.
