ON MISSING PERSONS IN CYPRUS (03.07.2006)
Autonomous Missing Persons
Committee, which intensified their studies in Cyprus with the aim of
identifying the identities of missing persons, following the appointment of
their 3. Member from the UN Christophe Girod, met today (3 July) at a
reception meeting.
The committee will carry out
its first mass exhumation in August, which is expected to last for two months
during which 200 missing Turkish and Greek Cypriots will be identified and
handed back to their families.
The Turkish side which is
spending great effort for the studies of the committee, besides providing
extra expert and staff to the committee, has also increased its financial
support. The TRNC ‘s financial support for the committee since 1993, has
reached to 1 million US Dollars, financial
support for the committe great effort for the sutudies , 477 thousand o477477
thousand of which was made during the last two years.
Following the appointment of
its 3rd member, the fist official meeting of the Autonomous
Missing Persons Committee will be held on 7 July, Friday.
According to the official
figures of the committee, which was established in line with a UN Resolution
in 1981, and officially started its studies in 1984 ,there are 500 Turkish
Cypriot who are missing and 1450 Greek Cypriots.
