TELECOMMUNICATION
Telecommunication is a rapidly growing sector of the economy. The
Telecommunication Authority runs a public network which has a capacity of
84,546 connections. The Authority also provides telex, fax and telegram
transmission services. A deal signed with a private company introduced
mobile telephone communications in 1995. Services also exist for the
transmission of information for computers.
The
International dialling code for the TRNC is (90) 392. This is followed by
the local code and the number required.
Postal
services are carried out by the Post Office which has a monoply on the
conveyance of letters. Parcel post services, however, are undertaken by
private companies as well.
Mail from
overseas is received via Turkey to break the blockage by the Greek Cypriot
authorities. Hence the code Mersin-10,
Turkey,
is used for all addresses for North Cyprus.
Turkish Cypriot postage stamps are widely sought after
internationally by philatelists.
