EDUCATION

The TRNC's educational system aims to develop fully the abilities of all individuals, young and old, both for their personal benefit as well as that of the society as a whole.

The education system in the TRNC can be broadly defined in three parts :

Pre-School Education : Pre-School Education is provided by kindergartens for children between the ages of 5 and 6.

Primary Education : Primary school education is provided at as elementary school and designed for the 6-11 age-group, it lasts for 6 years and is free and compulsory.

Secondary Education : Secondary Education is provided at two stages. First Stage (Secondary-Junior) lasts for three years. Children between 12-14 age-group follow this program. It is free and compulsory. The second stage is designed for the 15-18 age-group and has a 4 year programme of instruction. It is provided by high schools known as Lycee's and vocational schools. The technical and vocational schools are comprised of commercial Lycee's technical training schools, the vocation of agriculture, the school of nursing and mid-wifery.

There are six internationally recognised universities in all of which the medium of instruction is English. They are the Eastern Mediterranean University, the Near East University, the Girne American University, the European University of Lefke, Middle East Technical University North Cyprus Campus and the Cyprus International University all of which have  long proved themselves as primary centres for higher education in the Mediterranean. The American system is adopted in all universities and the academic year is made up of two semesters, October to January and February to June. Students can also enroll in summer school and take additional courses in summer. There are more than
40,000 students from about 60 countries including the Middle East countries, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Iran and the Gulf countries. All of these six universities offer a wide range of programmes through the faculties of Engineering, Economics, Administrative Sciences, Fine Arts, Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, Communications, Law, Education, Tourism and Hotel Management, and Computer Sciences leading to BA, B.Sc., MBA and PHD degrees in various fields. The universities enjoy an excellent reputation with their outstanding teaching staff, contemporary educational facilities and modern campuses. All universities have English preparatory schools for those students who do not have sufficient English.  Accommodation facilities are available at very competitive rates.
